This site is designed to provide basic information about criminal law in Illinois. We attempt to answer general questions about what happens after an arrest for a criminal charge. Nothing can take the place of a free consultation with our firm. A criminal case could be the most serious occurrence that brings a person to court. Many times not just your money or livelihood, but your very freedom, is at stake. Our criminal justice system is based on a series of laws which seek a fair disposition of the charges brought against a person. It is necessary to understand, however, that in a criminal case, the Government, be it State or Federal, can take your money, your liberty, or even your life, depending on the allegation. A criminal charge can range in seriousness from a minor business or traffic offense to misdemeanor cases that may be punishable by up to a year in jail, to felony cases where you can be sentenced to the penitentiary ir even be given the death sentence. When you are faced with a criminal charge, the allegation alone leaves many people feeling both scared and helpless. When the case is the Government versus you, or your loved one, it is easy to feel overwhelmed by the prospect of facing trial. Most lawyers believe that a criminal case requires a lawyer that concentrates in handling criminal matters. Whether you are charged with a DUI, a serious traffic offence, or a felony, the stakes involved dictate that the lawyer handling the matter be one that is of the highest caliber with the greatest amount of experience. It is widely suggested that only the only thing standing between the defendant and jail is a good lawyer. For some legal matters, prices can and should be a consideration. A simple will or real estate closing can be handled by many lawyers. When the legal matter involved is one where a person can be sentenced to jail, prison, or worse, a lawyer who concentrates in criminal matters is essential.
